No solution for Dersley sewage problems

“Cleaning the sewage is not enough.”

For the past 12 years, Dersley and Eastvale residents have been fighting a losing battle with the sewage dam situated in Cloverfield Road.

“The stench has been unbearable for all this time and we seriously think the metro should consider making a plan to solve the overflow issue,” says Marie Buchner, a member of the Dersley Community Association (DCA).

In September 2015, the DCA met with the metro’s water and sanitation department head Anton Deysel who told them the metro will do its best to fix the problem.

Buchner says it is almost two years later and there has been no improvement or any answers from the metro on what their future plans are towards a solution to the sewage problem.

“They have been blaming illegal miners for blocking the pipes for their illegal mining activities for far too long, instead of coming up with a solution,” says Eunice Kruger from Eastvale.

Health hazard concerns were also raised by Kruger.

She says the sewage is causing an unhealthy environment and with the rainy season approaching the water will soon be contaminated.

CJ Kruger from Eastvale, suggested a bigger pipeline.

“Metro engineers have visited the sewage site numerous times in the past.

“I seriously suggest they should upgrade the pump house with a bigger pump as the current one is too small for the capacity in the area,” he says.

Another suggestion is to throw lime over the massive dam formed by the sewage.

Clr Ramesh Sheodin reported the overflowing sewage and the metro have sent a team to pump out the sewage on Thursday.

“The clean-up doesn’t last long though but I have put the sewer problem in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and I do hope the metro will find a solution soon,” he says.
