Welgedacht gets its first park

What was once an open area with a few trees in Welgedacht is turning into a place the residents can enjoy.

Ward Clr Dean Stone announced the construction of the new community park next to the Welgedacht Primary School on the corner of Third and Fourth avenue on Wednesday.

“It will include a picnic area, all kinds of amenities, themed play area, a tricycle track and an amphitheatre,” he says.

Road signs will be put up at the tricycle track to increase road awareness.

Included in the park will also be a chess board and a paved walkway.

“The name of the park has not yet been established. African sculptured artwork will be visible as well as solar lights,” says Stone.

“We’re working with local general workers who are part of the expanding government-established public works programme.

“We have also appointed a liaison officer, Dipuo Manyake, who will be on site to address challenges with regards to the park,” he says.

Stone asked the metro not to remove any trees from the open space.

“There are a lot of birds that nest in the trees, but some of the tree branches need to be trimmed,” he says.

Manyake says their children have nowhere to play and the new park will definitely contribute to happy picnics in the park.

“This park will be a place residents can come to and it will bring much good,” she says.

Project supervisor Kamo Dinyane says an irrigation system will be installed to water the plants and the grass.

“Although the park will be fenced off with Clear-Vu fencing, there will be four entrances,” he says.

Phase one of the park is due to be completed in six months.
