Police investigate smuggled beer sold in Springs

SAPS will investigate allegations on beer being sold in Springs.

“The allegations made in an online article on how beer is smuggled across the border and sold in Springs cannot be verified,” says Capt Thichulwai Tshilate, Ekurhuleni East Cluster spokesperson.

He says in the article the woman claims she is selling the beer to Zimbabwean immigrants, working as miners in Springs.

“Making allegations that we don’t care or know that it is beer, is not carrying any weight,” says Tshilate.

Although the woman claims her profits are soaring, police say they are not aware of any two-litre plastic bottles of the alleged opaque sorghum beer being sold in Springs.

He says people should come forward with such information and they can stay anonymous.

“If the beer is being smuggled across the border it is an investigation on its own.

“However, I will discuss the allegations with the Springs station commander Brig Thembeka Gwebushe and we will launch an investigation,” says Tshilate.
