Human trafficking suspects remain in custody

Formal bail application hearing of seven human trafficking sex den accused postponed.

Seven people were arrested in connection with a human trafficking sex den in Third Street, Springs. They appeared in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The case was postponed to September 18 for a formal bail application.

The seven suspects were among the 19 people who were arrested on May 24 in connection with alleged sexual exploitation and human trafficking in Third Street.

They briefly appeared in court on May 29 when their case was postponed to June 6 for further investigation.

The case was again postponed to September 8 for further investigation.

According to Capt Johannes Ramphora, SAPS spokesperson, 12 of the people who were arrested, including a man believed to be a local soap star, were released on May 29 as no evidence was found against them.

The seven suspects will remain in custody at Modderbee Prison until their next court appearance.
