Answers on new development still pending

No answers for new development in Edelweiss.

Residents of Springs are concerned about being kept in the dark concerning the new development in Daggafontein.

The project, which was initiated over seven years ago, is said to be a new Mega City planned for the residents of Springs.

The property development is adjacent to Edelweiss Extension, south of the N17 highway.

According to the Gauteng Infrastructure Funding Summit Mega Projects booklet, published on the Gauteng Funding Project website, the project will yield an estimated 17 711 residential units as well as commercial and industrial properties.

These units are known as Breaking New Ground units (BNG), Community Residential units (CRU), social housing rental units and affordable housing (known as GAP housing).

Concerned resident Melanie Bruwer said, on the Addie’s Facebook page, residents feel they have been left in the dark and dust.

“What is really going on here and who has approved these plans?” she asks.

Despite requests from the residents, the developer doesn’t seem keen to share the plan of action.

The development is expected to take nine years to complete.

“If they are serious then build the boundary walls first so that those of us in the surrounding areas can live without the dirt and noise.

“I wonder where the environmental studies are because there are guinea fowl, squirrels and other bird life here that have not been considered,” says Bruwer.

The Mega City is being developed by the Alticon Group.

The land on which the development will take place is spread over a 750-hectare area and the project is a Greenfields mixed housing development.

According to the developer, the Alticon Group, the planned development in Edelweiss Extension Three will see the Mega City include mixed housing with commercial and industrial developments, three schools and a medical centre as well as all other amenities.

“A portion of the property (8.6 hectares) has been zoned for a medical facility which will include a hospital, emergency and baby wellness centres, radiology, dental care, high care unit, pathology and optometry.

“Mega City initiatives include solar farms, access to internet services, gas infrastructure, smart metering services and waste energy generation.

“Residential units will include 4 730 full title BNG units, 4 259 CRU multi-storey housing units, 6 920 social and rental stock multi-storey units, 1896 full title single units.

“These units will have boundary fencing, solar geysers, landscaping and paved roads.

“Safe and secure parks will be available because access will be controlled.

“The main objectives of the project are to deliver sustainable human settlements and smart cities aimed at providing residents and users with a comfortable and quality lifestyle.”

Phase one of the development was completed in May.

One of the developers, who asked to remain anonymous, says the metro has instructed them not to speak to the press.

“We are concerned that not all agreements are in place right now but hope processes will be 100 per cent complete by the end of August,” he says.

In a previous statement metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe states: “The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements has approved the project.”

Despite written and verbal requests for comment, none had been received from the metro at the time of going to press.
