Business robbery ends in murder

Security guard stabbed and shot dead.

Sibongiseni Makhathini (55) was allegedly stabbed seven times and shot in the neck once before he died on Monday.

Two guards were on duty at a business on the corner of Industrial and South Main Reef roads, New Era, at 12.15pm.

One of the guards claims he was in the guard room alone when he heard Makhatini screaming, “I caught them.”

SAPS spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora says when the guard investigated he found two suspects holding the handcuffed, deceased man.

The second guard’s hands were cuffed as well and he was taken to the change room.

Upon entering he heard a gun shot. When it was quiet, he pressed the panic button.

Ramphora says when the security company arrived on the scene, they found the deceased with nine stab wounds to his back, three on his chest and a bullet wound to his neck.

“One of the trucks on the premises was broken in to and the safe behind the driver’s seat was forced open,” he says.

Paramedics arrived and declared the deceased dead on the scene.

Ramphora says it is not known what was taken from the safe.

“We are investigating a business robbery and murder case,” he says.
