Sewage leak is bad for business

A sewage leak is causing havoc for a pharmacy owner and his customers, as its smell and appearance appals anyone who come near it.

The pharmacy, situated in Third Street, Springs CBD, has been plagued by the sewage stench for close to 10 months.

“We have reported the matter to the Ekurhuleni Metro numerous times, but nothing is being done,” says the owner of the pharmacy.

He asks his staff, he adds, to clean the pavement outside the pharmacy every day, because he can’t accept filth lying there.

The owner claims the metro doesn’t care about Third Street and says he cannot understand how they could allow the street to be in its current condition.

“It’s going from bad to worse and the fact that the council does nothing about it frustrates us.”

He claims some of the other shop owners throw their water on the pavements, as well as hair and papers.

“It gets worse during the course of the day, and this isn’t right.”

The owner says he has taken the initiative to clean up their side of the pavement, but it is not their responsibility to keep the streets and dustbins clean.

“They don’t even empty the dustbins regularly and it gets really bad at times,” he says.

The metro had not commented at the time of publishing.
