Hijackers target driver at red light

Police are investigating a hijacking that occurred at the red traffic light along Wessel Road in Springs.

The Springs police are investigating a case of hijacking after a man was hijacked in his white Audi vehicle in the early hours of Monday morning in Welgedacht.

It is alleged the complainant was driving home after dropping off a friend at his home when he stopped at the red light on Wessel Road.

Police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says the complainant alleges he was shocked when he saw two men on the driver’s side of the car and the other one on the passenger side.

“They demanded that he unlock the car doors and he did.

“Armed with firearms, they forced him into the boot of the car and drove off.

“They stopped at an isolated location, where they demanded he give them his bank cards and PIN.

“They then tied his hands and drove off with the vehicle, leaving him in the field,” he says.

Ramphora says in the vehicle there were two cellphones, one being an iPhone, a smart ID, a driver’s licence and keys for another car.

“No one has been arrested thus far. We are calling on anyone with information to contact the Springs Police Station on 011 365 5718,” he says.
