PAM Brink Stadium’s future hangs in the balance

The future of PAM Brink Stadium depends on a metro community survey.

PAM Brink Stadium might soon be demolished depending on the outcome of a recent metro market study.

The metro initiated a project to collect data from the community to determine the future of this Springs landmark.

A community attitude and perception survey started in May and covers areas of the CBD, Geduld, Brakpan CBD and KwaThema.

Questions asked in this survey include: “Are you familiar with the stadium and have you ever visited the stadium when it was still operational?” and “What would the community like to see happening to the stadium?”

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe says the outcome of the market study will give direction on whether the facility has to be upgraded or not.

The purpose of the study is to provide recommendations that are prudent and cost effective.

Gadebe says their aim is the following:

• To assess the level and interest of sport and recreation participation in the area.

• Identification of potential user groups and product mix.

• Assess the needs for competitive sport and recreation.

• Determine the current and future needs of the community.

• Development of scenarios and cost benefit analysis.

To date, the metro has not indicated when the deadline for the market study will be.

Several community meetings, hosted by the metro, were held in the past regarding the future of the stadium.

This landmark was the venue for several Springbok test rugby games in the 50s, 80s and in 2001.

In 1972, rugby player Piet Greyling led his Transvaal side to a 25-19 win over Eastern Transvaal at PAM Brink Stadium.

The cup was won with the help of Gerald Bosch, who dropped the winning points in the final minutes.

The Eastern Cricket Union (ECU), previously the North Eastern Transvaal Board and Eastern Transvaal Cricket Union, was founded on June 12, in 1991, and became an affiliate of the United Cricket Board of South Africa in the same year.

The ECU moved its headquarters from PAM Brink Stadium to Willowmoore Park in 1996.

On February 8, 2003, the Bulls played against the Renegades in a pre-season match, also at PAM Brink.

Gadebe says to determine costs for upgrading the stadium, and before any long term decisions can be made, they have to wait for the completion of the market study.
