Esda resident celebrates a century

Centenarian celebrates an important milestone.

Helen Olivier celebrated her 100th birthday with friends at Esda Frail Care on Thursday.

She was surrounded by friends and loved ones from the centre as well as the minister and other congregation members of the NG Kerk Springs-Noord.

When Esda’s administrator, Petro Burr-Dixon, asked Helen how old she is, she responded with a smile, “I am 94 years old”.

Petro says that to her knowledge, Helen has no family left but is a wonderful friend to all the other frail-care residents.

Achieving this milestone is something Helen will always remember and she says she is grateful to God for keeping her alive for a century.

“I never thought I will get this old,” she says.

Olivier expressed her feelings about the people who were able to make the recognition possible.

She has been a resident at Esda Retirement Village for quite some time, but had to be moved to frail care in 2010, due to her health.

Celebrating her birthday with her was maintenance manager Jannie van den Berg who turned 69 years, and frail care resident Marietjie van Wyk, who turned 63 years on Thursday.

Each of them received gifts but when Olivier received her gifts, she wanted to know where she was to put all the bags.

Olivier says even at 100 years of age, she still feels good.

“I just can’t express how happy I am for being spoiled with two birthday cakes, which I will gladly share with the residents,” she says.

She received a cake from the church as well as a sponsored cake from a Springsgate businessman.

The sponsored cake was big and so, all the residents enjoyed some of it with their afternoon tea in the lounge of the frail care facility.
