Primary school children in shock after accident in Springs

Fifteen primary school learners were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment after an accident in the CBD.

EMPD and various emergency services responded to an accident between a taxi and a white Toyota Etios on the corner of First Avenue and Sixth Street, CBD on Thursday afternoon.

Thabang Fenyane (28), the driver of the taxi, claims he was driving in First Avenue when the driver of the Etios suddenly changed lanes and drove into his vehicle.

When the vehicle came to a standstill, he asked the children to get out and took them to the side of the road.

“I immediately asked them if they were okay,” says Fenyane.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services rushed to the scene and paramedics from High Care Ambulance and Maponya arrived shortly thereafter.

Both drivers didn’t sustain any injures; however, the children were all in shock and were transported to a nearby hospital because they all sustained minor injuries.

Katriena Chopi, the mother of one of the children, says her daughter is still in shock and is complaining about her leg hurting.

“I was getting worried because it was getting late and my 10-year-old daughter wasn’t at home yet, so I called the driver who informed me about the accident,” she says.

She accompanied her daughter to a hospital.

The driver of the Etios wasn’t available for comment.
