Employees from the Highveld district of a Nigel-based business got together to make a difference at Chance Children’s Home in Dunnottar, as part of the company’s Employee Volunteer Day (EPV) on Tuesday.
Unathi Mbanya, the company’s corporate social investment specialist for their North region, says it is not the first time their company has assisted the home.
“Due to the amount of work that needs to be done, we have decided to continue to lend a helping hand until we have made strides in making it a better home for the 64 children that live in it.”
The home in Dunnottar was established to provide shelter, food and protection for the 64 children aged between two and 18 years whom it houses.
“One of our key missions is to improve the lives of those who have been sexually abused and battered, as well as to provide support to abandoned children living with HIV/Aids,” says Mbanya.
Despite the chilly winter morning, she says the mood on Tuesday was one of great excitement and determination to ensure the work the teams had been tasked with would be completed to perfection.
The home was left with a fresh coat of paint, beautifully painted murals, a new netball court and revamped soccer field as well as benches, to name just a few of the improvements made.
Mbanya says a substantial amount is invested in the employee volunteer programme of the business as a means of encouraging employees to give back and make a meaningful contribution to local communities.
“As part of our mandate is to uplift and build the communities in which we have presence, we selected the children’s home in one of our focus areas and saw they were in need of our support.
We didn’t want this to be a once-off initiative and as such we have decided to visit this centre until we have accomplished our objectives,” adds Mbanya.
Annah Nkosi, Chance’s centre manager, told the volunteer employees how grateful she was to see them all again.
“We thank you for travelling all the way; we feel blessed by your efforts in renovating our home.
“You continue to help us make this place healthier and conducive for our children,” says Nkosi.
