SASSA hoax spreads alarm

SASSA alerts beneficiaries to be alert of fake news about their cards.

The South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) has alerted all pensioners to take note that the message going around about the renewal of cards is a hoax.

Beneficiaries were told they needed to apply for their new cards within 90 days because their old cards expired in December.

Nandi Mosia, spokesperson for SASSA Gauteng, says they want to put it on record they have not authorised such a statement and beneficiaries should ignore it.

“There is also a Facebook page claiming to offer SASSA loans.

“We will take action against perpetrators of such fake news spread on our behalf,” she says.

SASSA will announce the date for updating beneficiary cards soon by sending registered letters to the beneficiaries.

Mosia says beneficiaries should report people who ask them for their personal details, including their ID or PIN numbers, so that the law can take its course.
