Local donor centre opens on World Blood Donor Day

The South African National Blood Service’s (SANBS) Springs Donor Centre officially opened its doors at the Springs Mall last Wednesday.

Head of the SANBS’ donor relations Monique Schreiner says they decided to host the official opening on that day as it was also World Blood Donor Day (June 14).

“It was fitting to hold the launch on this day,” she says.

“The launch was held for Springs’ regular donors, to celebrate them and thank them for their many years of support to the centre.”

Schreiner adds that Springs is one of the top donor centres on the East Rand, collecting about 6 000 units of blood annually.

The donor centre opened its doors in Springs for the first time on August 1, 1995.

“There is a critical need for donations as the SANBS needs about 3 000 units of blood daily, nationally.”

She adds that during the winter months, donations significantly lower and stock drops.

“We encourage the community to get involved and donate blood at their own convenience.”

Donors must:

• Be between the ages of 16 and 65 years.

• Weigh at least 50kg.

• Lead a safe sexual lifestyle.

• Eat well before donating.

• Know their blood is safe.

The Springs Donor Centre’s doors are open from 10am to 6pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
