Nastassja du Preez says the robot has been flashing a red light for more than two weeks now.
Her average 30-minute trip to work, during peak traffic, now takes an hour and a half.
Du Preez says when she arrives at her child’s crèche it is already 6pm and some of crèches charge penalties when children stay later than 6pm.
“Not to mention the time and money being wasted because nothing is being done by the metro to fix the traffic light,” she says.
Du Preez is grateful for the three EMPD officers who recently directed the traffic for a day.
Another motorist, Susan Viljoen, says: “It is frustrating and we get demotivated about it being fixed soon.”
EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago says the department responsible for fixing the robots at that intersection has indicated they are awaiting parts to solve the problem.
“In the interim, the precinct will assist whenever possible,” he says.
According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe repair work to the faulty traffic light will be carried out as soon as all the required material which was ordered arrives from the supplier.
The metro encourages all drivers to slow down, stop and use the intersection as a four-way stop.
Gadebe says this will control all approaches unless a law enforcement or other authorised person is directing the traffic.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused to motorists,” says Gadebe.
