Grannies sought to help with knitting

Senior citizens handwork can make a difference in the lives of newborn babies.

Lesley Delport is looking for senior citizens to help her with knitting, or crocheting, clothing for newborn babies.

She has been volunteering her services in the maternity ward at Far East Rand Hospital for the past year.

“I enjoy working with pregnant teens, both through the birthing process and beyond.

“This may include anything from basic needs for the baby, to the odd transport request, advice on parenting a newborn and, later on, skills empowerment for eventual job creation,” she says.

According to Lesley many of the women who give birth in the unit are from impoverished backgrounds and some arrive with barely enough clothing for themselves, not to mention their newborn babies.

“My plan is to work with senior citizens at old age homes.

“There are many who have the most exquisite skills in knitting and crocheting,” she says.

Lesley is also looking for women to possibly assist in the knitting and crocheting of baby jackets and bootees.

She says these eager helpers will be paid a nominal fee per set of clothing produced, thereby allowing them to feel special, creative and worthy members of society.

“To kick start this initiative, I am requesting donations from the public of any secondhand baby clothing, preferably newborn to six months, baby wool, knitting needles and crochet hooks,“ says Lesley.

Anyone interested in this project can call Lesley on 076 897 9926.
