Making disability awareness mega fun

Vita Nova Centre rcently hosted their eighth fun day at the centre in Daggafontein.

Vita Nova Centre hosted their eighth fun day at the cewntre in Daggafontein on Saturday.

“The fun day is part of our disability awareness programme where we invite children and the community to be part of the fun and games on the day,” says assistant director Marina Potgieter.

Games played included tower building with balls and hula hoops, tug of war and using a spade to search for the golden fish between the bugs hidden in the sand.

Potgieter says every year more schools get involved.

“People are usually scared and unsure of disabled people, but at the fun day they look beyond the disability and treat the residents as part of the teams participating,” she says.

About 20 prefects from Drommedaris Primary School in Reiger Park made their first visit to the centre.

Committee member Leezel Jooste says they consider this visit as a learning curve for the teachers as well as the learners.

“All the children maintained good spirit throughout the day,” she says.

The four teams were made up by residents and about 150 learners from Drommedaris Primary School who represented The Addams Family, Strubenvale Primary School learners who represented The Simpsons, Pinegrove Primary School learners who represented The Incredibles and Veritas Preparatory learners who represented The Smurfs.

The Addams Family were crowned the winning team at the end of the event, with 821 points.

Teams scored points for their successes during each of the games played.

In second place were The Incredibles with 818 points; then came The Smurfs with 700 points; and the Simpsons came fourth with 600 points.

Centre management and personnel posed as Zombies and performed a humorous dance for the visitors.

Potgieter says they have wonderful people working at the centre, who practised daily to perfect their dance moves.

“The day was a success and I believe most of the visitors left with appreciation in their hearts,” says Potgieter.

The centre also plans a fun day on Tekkie Tax Day on May 26.

“It is difficult to find people who are willing to help with donations; therefore, this is quite an important project as we have a few residents who are orphans,” she says.

Anyone interested in supporting the centre by buying colourful Tekkie Tax shoelaces, stickers or T-shirts can contact Marina on 082 441 1759.
