Mascot steals hearts

Toddlers at Tannie Ella's day care centre, in Strubenvale, were treated to a visit by Happy, Vita Nova Centre's Tekkie Tax mascot, and Michelle Immelman, the director of Vita Nova, last week.

“Some of the children were scared of Happy at first, but as soon as they realised he is a ‘happy chap’ they were more at ease,” says Marina Potgieter, Vita Nova Centre’s assistant director.

Vita Nova, situated in Fish Eagle Road, Daggafontein, is home to 115 residents who have cerebral palsy.

The visit was in appreciation for the day care centre having bought 27 T-shirts and nine pairs of shoelaces from Vita Nova in support of Tekkie Tax Day, which is on May 26.

Marina says she recently contacted a few day care centre and nursery schools to promote their Tekkie Tax project.

“We were amazed at the tremendous support from this day care centre’s owner, Ella Strydom, her staff and the parents.

“There are a few other nursery schools and day care centres involved in the fund-raising but Ella and her team really showed us tremendous support, for which we are very grateful,” says Marina.

Orders for Tekkie Tax stickers and shoelaces can be place with Vita Nova until Monday, May 22.

Ella challenges other schools to be part of this fund-raising initiative.

“We enjoyed meeting Happy and supporting Vita Nova in this worthy cause,” she says.
