Springs’ first rugby team beats ERU team 49-27

Springs Rugby Club’s first team claimed victory over East Rand United (ERU) on Saturday.

The local teams faced much stronger ERU teams.

First team coach Ockert Brits says the first game kicked off at a good pace but became tougher towards the end of the first half, leaving the half-time score at 28-20.

“After half-time the players quickly picked up the pace again and it was too much for the ERU team to handle,” says Brits.

The first team was well prepared against the ERU’s first team, which gave the spectators a tough and entertaining 80-minute game.

ERU managed to score three tries in the game, but a much stronger local team scored seven tries.

Try-scorers were Cliffie Viljoen, Nico Botha, Inus Vermaak, Vernon du Preez and Riaan Botha, who each scored one try.

Wynand Venter, the scrum half, helped the local team by scoring two tries.

Brits says the right centre, Kazlo Holtszhausen, was wearing his kicking boots when he accurately placed the ball, adding seven goals to the score board.

“The players were determined to stay on top of their game,” he says.

They finished the game on a high note, giving Springs a victory of 49-27.

The second team lost their game to a much stronger ERU team 55-15.

Playing the first game of the day, the u-21 team had to bow down to their opponents and lost the game 38-12.

The local teams will play against North West University at Vanderbijlpark on Saturday.
