Illegal mining operation sees five suspects arrested

Five illegal miners, aged between 21 and 35, were arrested during a recent SAPS operation focused on illegal mining in Daggafontein and Strubenvale.

The operation took place between 10am and 3pm.

Police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora says the five suspects are also illegal immigrants.

He adds police also confiscated a motorbike, bicycle, five generators and three phendukas.

“The operation was successful and all the suspects will be charged with illegal mining,” says Ramphora.

The suspects will appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon.

“We are grateful for the assistance of the SAPS Air Wing Unit and the Public Order Policing Unit during the operation,” says Ramphora.
