Run for Bibles 2017

On June 4, thousands of athletes will compete in the 92nd Comrades Marathon 2017 from Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

The Bible Society of South Africa invites interested athletes to participate in the “Run for Bibles” project during this marathon.

“Put on your running shoes and set your stopwatch to participate in this great project,” says Marina Stebbing, secretary of the Bible Society.

She says if athletes don’t compete in the Comrades they can still contribute to the work of the society by running the Two Oceans, Loskopdam, Suikerbosrand and Nedbank City to City marathons or any other marathon.

Sponsorship forms are only made available to athletes once registration with The Bible Society has taken place.

Stebbing says friends, family, assembly members or colleagues may sponsor athletes per kilometre.

“In doing so funds are raised to finance the various projects which are aimed to make Bibles available to the poorest of the poor, Grade Seven learners of previously disadvantaged schools, prisoners and our neighbouring countries,” she says.

The money raised through marathons includes the following:

• Continuation with Bible translation within SA and the rest of the continent of Africa.

• Availability of an English Bible for the deaf.

• Bible programmes to address needs with the aim to increase interaction with the Word Bible based literacy amongst pre-shool children.

• Making the Audibible available in Siswati.
