Residents erect speed humps

Residents of Alliance Extension One, Benoni, recently took the law into their own hands and erected illegal speed humps in Outeniqua Road, between Eastvale and Modder East.

Ward 72 councillor Ramesh Sheodin says he was driving along Outeniqua Road last Saturday when he noticed the the road was closed off and the traffic was re-directed.

On inquiry, he discovered the road was being dug up and illegal speed humps were being erected by the residents.

According to the residents, motorists do not adhere to the speed limit of 60kmp/h and rather drive at 120kmp/h.

“I do understand the concern of the residents of Alliance Ext One, as the houses are on the verge of the road.

“However, the speed humps they erected were sharp edged and about 60cm high, roughly built with cement,” he says.

Sheodin reported the matter to the metro’s roads department.

He claims an investigation was done by the metro to rather erect legal speed humps and they responded by saying they would look into this.

“The metro reacted quickly and on Tuesday they sent a TLB machine to remove the illegal speed humps,” says Sheodin.

He claims the speed humps were dangerous and allegedly damaged vehicles.

“Taking the law into your own hands is not the right way to do things.

“There were also no warning signs of the speed humps, except for the tape used by the residents,” he says.

Sheodin says he is grateful for the municipality’s prompt response to the take action.

No comment was received from the metro at the time of publishing.
