Geduld epilepsy residents wrapped in love

The West Rand branch of social media charity group ‘Maak 'n Verskil’ recently donated 200 crocheted blankets to the residents of the South African National Epilepsy League's (SANEL) Geduld centre.

Mara Swanepoel, branch chief administrator, says their visit was part of a winter blanket project.

The group consists of 1 894 members and 10 members were present during the handover.

“We heard of the centre on the East Rand last year and decided to choose this as our charity,” she says.

The group was impressed with what they saw and decided to visit the centre again this year.

The organisation mainly focuses on disabled people, senior citizens, premature babies and children.

“The idea of the blankets is for the disabled and senior citizens to use these as a lap or shoulder blanket, especially those who are wheelchair bound,” she says.

When the members decided on the Geduld centre, they immediately started to crochet blankets.

Mara says they crochet up to 1 500 blankets for donation each year.

SANEL Gauteng branch director Magdaleen Kruger says they appreciate the visit and the donation.

“The gesture made our residents feel so special,” she says.

“In addition to the blankets, the residents also received Easter eggs.

“The visit was definitely also an awareness for the group of women since they were exposed to multi-disabled people.”

Other projects the group are involved in include Mother Teresa vests for new born and premature babies, beanies, scarves, bed socks and knitted gloves, jerseys for toddlers, second hand baby clothes as well as sanitary towels for girls.

Magdaleen says most of the women in ‘Maak ‘n Verskil’ donate the wool themselves, but also welcome donations.
