Murdered toddler’s parents granted bail

Parents who had evaded police for 10 years following the unnatural death of their three-year-old daughter appeared in the Springs Magistrate's Court on Friday, last week, charged with her murder.

The couple were granted R1 500 bail each and the case was postponed to June 19.

On April 3, 2007, Springs police were contacted by a funeral parlour in Geduld about the unnatural death of a child and when they arrived saw the body of the toddler had sustained multiple injuries.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs SAPS spokesman, says an inquest docket was opened but the police could not trace the child’s parents.

“The suspects were placed at the top of the most-wanted list in Springs,” says Ramphora.

Despite the case being 10 years old, thorough investigation by W/O Maude Strydom led to the father (41) of the toddler being arrested in Benoni on April 6.

He appeared in court on April 17 and was remanded in custody at Modderbee Prison.

Ramphora says the father informed Strydom of the whereabouts of the child’s mother.

The mother (38) was arrested in Worcester on April 11 and transferred to Springs police on April 12.
