Refuse removal cause frustration

The removal of refuse is still contributing to the frustration of Springs residents.

Casseldale resident Nastassja du Plessis says they are frustrated with the bins not being emptied on a Tuesday as per the metro’s schedule.

“We leave home early on a Tuesday morning and put our bins out on the scheduled day, only to take them back in again because the metro doesn’t stick to the schedule,” she says.

However, metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says the refuse removal calendar remains the same for all areas.

Previously Gadebe stated that there was no diesel available in Springs and the Springs Waste Management (WMS) vehicles had to fill up at Alberton and Germiston.

Gadebe says this was the case but diesel is now available at the Springs Fuel Depot and there are sufficient refuse trucks.

“Refuse removal trucks are maintained regularly and are done as per vehicle maintenance schedule,” says Gadebe.

He says the metro faces a challenge with scavengers in the CBD.

“WMS strives to clean the area to the best of their available resources,.

“We did experience problems with various resources leading to backlogs, but these backlogs are catered for the next day,” Gadebe says.

He says the monthly refuse charge paid by residents, doesn’t only cater for the collection of refuse.

“The charge also caters for other services rendered by the WMS including maintenance of landfill sites, litter picking, removal of animal carcasses and removal of illegal dumping,” says Gadebe.
