WATCH: Homeowner distraught after fire

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) responded to a fire in Brice Street, Strubenvale, on Thursday afternoon.

The thatched roof of the entertainment area, which is attached to the house, went up in flames at about 3pm.

When neighbours saw smoke and flames coming from the roof they immediately called the Springs Central Fire Station for assistance.

The owner of the house, Bernard Mbatha (49), was not home when the fire started.

“A contractor working on the roof phoned me to say the thatch had caught fire.”

Mbatha says he hired a contractor to rubberise the rusted corrugated iron of the thatched roof.

“By the time I arrived home, the fire fighters had already started to extinguish the fire,” says Mbatha.

“This is a major setback for me.

“Fate has hit me badly this year as my house was broken into in February and all my children’s clothes and our electronic goods were stolen,” says Mbatha.

He adds the renovations to the roof will now have to be put on hold.

DEMS shift manager Anand Govender says the team extinguished the fire within seven minutes.

The contractor was too shocked to talk to the Addie.

No injuries were sustained during the fire and no damage was done to the rest of the house.

DEMS are investigating the cause of the fire.
