Metro: ‘We are catching up on refuse backlog’

A backlog in the collection of refuse removal is causing confusion and anger among Springs residents.

One of the residents, Marietjie du Plessis, says they are extremely unhappy with the lack of service they are receiving.

“We put our refuse out on the scheduled day, only to have to take it back and put it out again because nothing is on schedule,” she says.

Ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin alleges that the municipality did not have diesel for waste collection trucks.

“Refuse has not been collected all over Ekurhuleni this week [last week],” says Sheodin.

The DA is taking up the matter with the MMC of Environment and Waste Management, Clr Ndosi Shongwe.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro, says diesel is supposed to be available at the various Ekurhuleni Metro fuel depots.

“Diesel was not available in Springs, Nigel, Brakpan and Benoni.

“The Springs Waste Management vehicles had to fill up at Alberton and Germiston, which took the whole day,” he says.

Responding to a query on whether there are any problems in the petroleum indistry, Gadebe says: “We have not been advised on any problems in the petroleum industry.

“We are informed by the suppliers that part of the challenge is that they are not prioritised at the fuel gantries.”

The metro is looking at a solution around this challenge.

“We have started with collecting waste to cover up on the backlog,” says the spokesperson.

Gadebe concludes by saying that refuse should be kept until the next day of collection and excess refuse should be placed in black bags next to bins.
