Happy times for ducks and geese at George Sutter Park

The ducks and geese at the George Sutter Park duck pond welcome Kathy Preston daily during their feeding time with their loud quacks.

Kathy says it is quite noisy and it is worse when she takes a human friend or two with her to the pond.

They gather at the gate to receive their mealies and sometimes bread from her.

It fascinates her to see how they have accepted her and even nibble at her feet and legs while she feeds them.

Her feathered friends pick the food up from the ground and then slip into the pond for a sip of water or a swim.

Kathy says they are quite tame and some even allow her to touch them.

Hennie Brits enjoys feeding his feathered friends at the George Sutter Park duck pond.

Feeding her friends has become part of her daily routine and she enjoys every moment with them.

“I wish more people would get involved in supporting the geese and ducks.”

“It costs money to feed them, and with more people on board it will make my job less stressful,” she says.

On Wednesday, Kathy, Hennie Brits and his wife Alida visited their feathered friends and enjoyed every moment with them.

Hennie and a helper were behind the grass-cutting on the inside of the fence.

Soon after the geese at the George Sutter Park duck pond receive their mealies and bread they go for a swim.

They removed all the weeds and trimmed some of the trees growing on the slope of the dam amid the palm trees.

“We do this because we love to watch the birds enjoying the water, and their food, in safe environment,” says Hennie.

He says they will continue to monitor the breeding in an attempt to control the number of geese and ducks.

The borehole pump was switched on again on Wednesday, after it was off for a few days due to the rain.
