Sink-hole in Strubenvale concerns residents

The exact origin of a sink-hole that has recently formed in Mulder Avenue, Strubenvale, remains unclear.

“A sink-hole is essentially any hole in the ground created by erosion, but I am not sure if it is erosion or the roots of trees on the pavement that caused the hole,” says Brian Meadows, the new owner of a house in the street where the sink-hole has formed.

“I have raised my concerns about this being a sink-hole to the metro but it has fallen on deaf ears,” he says.

Meadows (36) says there were big trees on the pavement, which the previous owner claims he asked the metro to cut down as they were hanging dangerously over his palisade fence.

“Since this also fell onto deaf ears, the owner claims he had the trees cut down himself,” says Meadows.

A water pipe is clearly visible in the hole and Meadows’ concern is that the hole might become bigger and somebody might fall into it.

“I don’t think it is normal and the roots of the trees are overgrown and could possibly have a detrimental affect on the sink-hole,” he says.

“The metro did visit the premises, recently, to inspect a supposed blocked rain, but I informed them the problem is on the pavement and not at the back of the house, and that it is not a blocked drain,” he says.

Meadows says when he reported the matter again on February 20, he was informed that the “case was closed”.

“The metro cannot ignore this complaint as it could possibly turn into a disaster,” he says.

No comment was received from the metro at the time of publishing.
