According to metro spokesman Themba Gadebe, they have repaired the lights several times but they are repeatedly vandalised.
“This is not a maintenance problem but theft and vandalism that we have little control over,” he says.

He claims the matter requires collaboration between all stakeholders involved, namely the community, the police and the metro.
Netcare N17 Hospital general manager Andries Joubert says a date for the meeting he asked for with City Council has still not been confirmed.
The hospital has taken matters into its own hands. After two attacks on nurses occurred in September, it cleared the area in a five-metre radius around the hospital and will continue to keep it clean.
“We have also installed floodlights on the premises, to provide the necessary light to the nurses who use public transportation before shift changes at 7am and 7pm,” he says.

He alleges that the metro isn’t doing anything about the lights because its attitude is that they will just be vandalised again.
“This has been an ongoing battle since I started working at the hospital in 2014,” he says.
