Zaden will spend more time in hospital

Zaden Green (3) will spend a few weeks in Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital due to the skin grafts that needed to be done on his legs and body.

He was admitted last Sunday, four days prior to his birthday.

His mother Caren Green took gifts, cold drink and sweet packets to Zaden and a few other children in the ward, making it a special birthday.

The day after admission, a skin graft was done and skin was taken off his thighs and transplanted onto the wounds at the bottom of his legs and stomach.

It was the third skin graft since Zaden got burned at their Strubenvale home on October 8.

Caren says the skin grafting is done under anesthesia and this time he had to have a blood transfusion before the time.

She explains that during the cleaning process the wounds are scrubbed which start bleeding, causing blood loss.

The doctors informed Caren prior to the skin grafting that Zaden’s blood count was only 6.7 instead of 12.

Therefore, they had to give the toddler a blood transfusion.

“Watching him going through so much pain is heartbreaking,” she says.

There are visible scars on his face and arms where the wounds have healed, but his skin has pulled tight on his left foot and thumb, pulling it upwards, and he will have to undergo surgery to have this fixed.

“He is a very brave boy and understands why his dressings need to be changed three times a week and why he needs to go to theatre for the treatment of his wounds” she says.

Zaden sustained third-degree burns to his body and both legs in October.

He will have to undergo several skin grafts before these wounds will be properly healed.

His mother says when she saw the wounds to his body and how raw the flesh was, she started crying.

“We are grateful for every donation and the kindness of the community. It doesn’t go unnoticed,” she says.
