Metro neglects maintenance of sports grounds

Concern was raised by the committees of various sports clubs using the facilities at the back of PAM Brink Stadium.

Aaron Nkadimeng, manager of the Payneville Masters soccer team, says they are extremely disappointed with the upkeep, or lack thereof, of the sport grounds behind the PAM Brink Stadium.

“We can hardly practise or play games here, it’s embarrassing to bring other teams here,” he says.

“We can’t even play at our home ground in Bakerton because it is worse than here.”

He feels they need the grounds to be tended to and the grass cut on a regular basis.

However, he is not the only one expressing concern about the metro’s lack of maintainance at the sport grounds.

Rassie Ras, chairman of the Springs Jukskei Club, says they were informed by the Eastern Gauteng Jukskei District officials that no league games will be played in Springs due to the condition of the grounds.

Rather jukskei players will have to travel to Boksburg for league games.

“It is embarrassing to think that our wonderful jukskei grounds are not being maintained,” he says.

The water pipes were stolen in October and Ras reported the matter to the metro, but nothing has happened since then.

He claims they have to clean the sandpits themselves as, when the metro cuts the grass, they don’t cut the edges around the sandpits.

Club members cannot even practice at the club due to this problem.

Ras says they are paying club fees to the metro and yet they get no service whatsoever.

“The metro should seriously consider looking after the sport grounds that are still in use in Springs,” he says.

No metro comment was forthcoming at the time of publishing.
