Recyclers responsible for mess at taxi rank

Dumisane Buthelezi (51) has been complaining to the metro about the refuse bin at the Springs Taxi Rank for weeks on end with no response.

On Thursday, he accompanied the Addie journalist to where the bin is situated, to point out what the taxi drivers and commuters have to deal with on a daily basis.

Refuse was strewn all around the bin. Two people were seen inside the bin, sorting out recyclable materials.

Buthelezi says these people are trying to make a living from recycling.

However, he feels the metro should clean up the refuse around the bin and replace the refuse bin regularly.

“The refuse around the bin is blown all over the place on a windy day and the stench is unbearable.

Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says the bin was emptied on January 6 and all bins are emptied once a week.

“We replaced the old bin, after each removal, with an empty one,” he says, adding “The area was cleaned last Wednesday.”

He claims the recyclers are responsible for mess around the refuse bin at the taxi rank.

“Seeing that the bins are not in a secured area, it will be difficult to control the people who collect recyclables,” says Gadebe.

He claims this can only been done by law enforcement.
