Pit bull attacks four-year-old and father, saved by a man and his dog

KwaThema - In the early hours of Sunday morning, after having welcomed in the New Year, a man and his child were bitten by a dog.

Police spokesman Capt Thabo Sibuyi says the horrific incident took place after midnight, when people were busy letting off fireworks.

“The pit bull, wondering around in Luthango Street, grabbed the four-year-old’s right thigh and refused to left go.

“Mbulelwa Msiza (32) from Lepelle Street (close by) then ran to his house to fetch his smaller dog with the hope that it could help save the child.

“He returned and placed his dog where it could distract the pit bull which then let go of the child as it saw the smaller dog,” says Sibuyi.

During that time, the father (age unknown) of the child attempted to save his daughter and Msiza saved his dog.

“The angry pit bull went on to bit the father on the knee and sunk its teeth into his thigh.

“Mzisa again placed his dog in the pit bull’s line of vision, and the pit bull let go of the father who was able to catch it.

“The smaller dog remained unharmed,” he adds.

Police were called and the father and child were rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

Officers also contacted the SPCA to collect the pit bull.

“No case was opened as it is unknown who the dog belongs to.

“As the police, we applaud this young man for his bravery and for helping this family.

“We also warn dog owners to keep their dogs in their yards to avoid such cases,” says Sibuyi.
