How to keep the holiday calories at bay

We're all inclined to overindulge while on holiday, with plenty of celebrating over Christmas and partying into the New Year. Staying healthy is not easy and can be stressful - but it is possible!

Food is not always the only reason for not staying healthy, alcohol plays a big part.

Here are some tips on how to reduce the amount of alcohol you consume:

* Alternate between alcohol and water instead of simply refilling with alcohol each time your wine or beer is finished.

* Offer to be the designated driver – it’s a sure-fire way of gaining instant popularity!

* Always ask for water with a meal, in addition to an alcoholic drink.

* When you choose a glass for your drink, always choose a tall, thin glass rather than a short, wide one.

* Drink slowly and try and put your glass down between sips.

Although most holidays are associated with food, try to keep the focus on fun and not on what the next meal is going to be.

You can also reduce what you eat during the holidays by trying these tips:

* Before going to Christmas lunch or to a party, eat something light to reduce your chances of snacking on high-calorie party food.

* Healthy snacks include reduced-fat yoghurt, a bowl of cereal or a cheese and tomato sandwich.

* Modify your eating times to keep your blood sugar steady without overdoing it on calories.

* Don’t skip breakfast, even if you only have a slice of wholegrain toast.

* Decide what you want to indulge in and what to skip, but don’t completely deprive yourself

on festive days; your willpower will eventually snap and you’ll end up overeating.

* Find time to be active, even if you only go for a short walk regularly.
