Abused women will benefit from Dersley CPF handbag donation

Four Dersley CPF women handed over handbags filled with toiletries to Sgt Sheilla Ramlall, domestic violence coordinator of the SAPS Victim Empowerment Centre on Wednesday.

Marie Buchner from the Dersley CPF says when the community donated a few second-hand handbags, the cleaning process had begun.

These women had to wash some of the handbags before they could start to fill them with toiletries.

“When we were satisfied with the end product we started adding the toiletries to the bags,” she says.

With enough toiletries to fill these bags, Marie and her team decided to get creative and wrapped the handbags individually as well.

Martel Reyneke, Annie Lubbe and Bianca Wessels are part of the team who made the handbag project a reality.

Marie says the purpose of the handbags is to wish abused women all the best in their recovery and hope they will be free from the cycle of abuse.

Sheilla appreciates the handbag initiative.

“I appreciate the help of Sector 5 in assisting the victims with care kits which will assist in the process of the comfort of the victims,” she says.

The handbags will be handed to the abused women as they come in at the end of the month.

Sheilla says once these women decide to leave their homes they have nothing and these bags filled with toiletries will help them with their basic needs.
