16 Days ends on a high note

Education, interaction, gifts and entertainment were the order of the day when the SAPS and other local organisations conducted a 16 Days of Activism outreach on Saturday.

Springs Cluster Corporate Communication and Social Crime Prevention, Pink Pistols Biker Group, Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences, End Time Ministries and Wild Wild Guardians were part of the outreach event.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says they started at the Springs Taxi Rank at 8am where they handed out pamphlets on domestic violence and sexual offences.

“We want the community to know how the process works when it comes to crime against women and children,” he says.

During the course of the morning a church service was held at the Auxano Seventh-day Adventist Church, in Geduld, where Capt Sonja Cilliers entertained the visitors with her beautiful voice.

Ramphora says they then moved on to the Rus ‘n Bietjie Old Age Home where he talked to the senior citizens.

“It is important to reassure senior citizens that the police are there to protect them against abuse and in times of trouble,” he says.

Margie Harber, of Wild Wild Guardians, baked muffins for all the senior citizens at Rus ‘n Bietjie and also Awendgloed and Natasha ‘Jinx’ Terblanche and fellow Pink Pistols bikers handed out gifts to the residents.

Ramphora says they also visited Fifth Avenue where there are several ATMs.

“Here, we spoke to community members about the importance of being vigilant at ATMs and not drawing too much money from an ATM, especially over the festive season. We believe people need to be made more aware of ATM fraud too.”

After a very successful outreach, the police and the other organisations involved said they believe strongly that the awareness and efforts around the 16 Days of Activism should continue throughout the year, not end on December 10.
