Bhairavi Sungum celebrate their elders

The Bhairavi Sungum hosted a fun-filled day to spoil and give thanks to the elderly members of the community.

The Bhairavi Sungum of Spring hosted its 26th annual Day With Our Elderly Parents, which saw a turnout of more than 150 senior citizens from the community.

“We are here to celebrate and give thanks to the senior members who have moulded and contributed to uplifting our community,” says chairman Kesavan Pillay.

The organisation invited around 400 elderly of all races and religions to the event, where they were spoiled with a lunch, live entertainment, gifts, as well as lots of activities that encouraged attendees to participate in the fun.

Programme director Roshni Govender welcomed the audience and gave them a heartfelt thanks for successfully raising a ‘strong’ generation and encouraged them to continue by striving to influence their grandchildren.

She asked everyone to not only introduce themselves to those at their table, but to also share their mood as either sunny, partly cloudy, or rainy, and to name one thing for which they are thankful.

Jay Singh and Hamif Laher entertained the guests along with children from the Tamil School, who performed dance items.

“This is such an unselfish event,” says Jay.

Prizes were handed out to the oldest person in attendance and the couple who have been married the longest, amongst others. The event was made possible by several sponsors. Kesavan maintains that the Bhairavi Sungum is merely a vessel for hosting the event.

“This is truly an event for the community, by the community” Kesavan says.

He attended the first event of its kind when he was only 13 years and has been passionate about showing gratitude and celebrating the elderly ever since.
