Springs library temporarily closes its doors

The Springs Library is currently closed to public use until further notice.

When Springs resident Martie Nell arrived at the library to return books on November 17, she was informed that the library was closed.

“One of the workers took our books and said the the metro had to close the library,” she says.

Nell called the Advertiser to find the reason behind this.

“We should be informed through the media if the library is closing its doors for whatever reason,” she says.

However, she is happy to find out it is just a temporary arrangement due to a burst pipe.

Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni Metro spokesman, says there was a burst pipe in the leaning section of the library on the ground floor, resulting in the closure of the library.

“Contractors have been appointed for the repairs of the affected areas and are expected to fix the burst pipe and clean and refresh the carpets,” he says.

Library employees were deployed to other libraries within the region.

He claims most of them were not willing to be deployed and preferred to work in the closed library on other levels within the building.

“We will open the library to the public as soon as the repairs and maintenance are completed,” says Gadebe.

No date was given by the metro for when the repairs and maintenance work will be done.
