Payneville toilets a waiting game

Gugulethu – There is still very minimal progress with the Payneville Extension One toilets.

Ward Clr Ramesh Sheodin however, explains that the contractors have been appointed and were on-site last Monday.

He goes on to say however, that he does not expect the work to commence before January next year due to the festive season.

This is because all building and construction normally stops at the beginning of December, he says.
“The remains of these toilets, are from the project that began in 2012.

“The project was to provide housing and sanitation for the residents of Gugulethu/Everest informal settlements.

“The intention by the Ekurhuleni municipality was to move the Gugulethu/Everest informal settlement temporarily to Payneville Extension One.

“It was also to rehabilitate the informal settlement and build RDP houses in Gugulethu/ Everest and afterwards build houses in Payneville Extension One,” he says.

About 1 050 toilets were built and the informal settlers were never relocated due to the court case and interdict.

This later led to vandalism of the property as all the steel doors and steel windows were stolen and many of the toilets dismantled.

The vandalism got so rife that even the bricks of the toilets were removed.

“I requested that RDP houses be built instead of the present plans to relocate the shacks to Payneville Extension One.

“The municipality has however, agreed to build RDP houses and remove the toilet structures.

“The first phase will entail the construction of tarred roads,” concludes Sheodin.

Comment from the metro regarding the matter had not been received at the time of publishing.
