Bloody sewage water spews from manhole

Pink sewage water spewed from a manhole across from the Civic Centre forcing vehicles to drive through rancid, bloody water.

Blood-tainted sewage water spewed from a manhole next to South Main Reef Road, across the street from the Civic Centre on Tuesday.

Ward councillor David Simelane reported the leak to metro at approximately 11am, after which maintenance workers started the repair work at around 1pm and completed it roughly two hours later that same day.

Simelane says that it is possible the blockage was caused by the abattoir up the street, as blood and pieces of cloth and meat were clearly visible in the waste.

However, Morgan Beef’s operational manager, Danie Marx, says that it’s certainly not the case.

Marx says that an external company that manages its effluent plant, installed a specialised filter earlier this year and upon visiting the scene, the operations manager suspects that the pipe was blocked further down.

“It has absolutely nothing to do with us,” Marx says.

“Our drains are clean and with the baleen, I can’t see how we’re contributing to the problem in any way,” he continues.

The Addie reported on the leak in February and Simelane says that action needs to be taken urgently.

“It was blocked then, it’s blocked now and it will block again,” he says.

He says he will follow up on the matter.

After two attempts were made to contact Metro, they have failed to comment at the time of publishing.
