Since he was admitted to hospital on October 8, he has been to theater twice for treatment of his wounds.

Zaden’s wounds were cleaned under anaesthetic on October 11.

His parents were told the doctors would be cutting dead skin off his body.

Henna says Zaden received a skin graft two weeks ago.

“When a skin graft is done, they have to grow skin on other parts of his body – a process that can take weeks.

His father claims it is a process that can take weeks.

A speech therapist recently visited Zaden to help him to talk again.

The burns Zaden sustained to his face, caused the muscles to tighten and he couldn’t talk properly, therefore he was given speech therapy to improve his vocalisation.

“She used various interesting exercises to strengthen his muscles,” says Henna.

Zaden’s speech has improved and his speech is normal again.

The boy currently receives physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles in his legs and feet.

“The therapy is given as a precaution, as Zaden has to learn how to walk again,” says his father.

Zaden sustained third degree burns to his left arm, on his chin, body and both legs during a fire that broke out at their home in Ermelo Road, Casseldale on October 8.

He was rushed to the Far East Rand Hospital, who covered his wound and stabilised him, before he was transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Henna says the toddler will be going for another skin graft soon.
