More raw sewage flowing into Blesbokspruit

The sewage leak behind businesses in Ermelo Road, CBD, will have an influence on the habitat of birds and fish of the Blesbokspruit.

According to Robert Duncan from Sump, it has been leaking non-stop for several months.

Metro is complaining about the drought and has put water restrictions in place, but its water pipes are all leaking.

On October 7 Duncan took the Advertiser to an open field behind the business.

He claims it has been leaking for the past seven months, but for the last four months it has been clean water and sewage.

“I was wondering if the clean water leak is not one of the main water pipes linked to their business, as we received a R33 000 water account in September,” he says.

The main and only storm water drain in Springs runs underground from the Civic Centre into the Blesbokspruit.

Duncan says during the rainy season all the rainwater flows down the storm water tunnel and the “roof is not visible then”.

“But if sewage is leaking into this tunnel from somewhere it is going to cause havoc,” says Duncan.

Recently, he walked approximately 50m into the tunnel where it curves to the left, and discovered the roof has caved in.

The tunnel is made of concrete slabs and water and sewage are pouring into the tunnel from where the roof collapsed.

“This mixture of clean water and sewage flows directly into the Blesbokspruit,” he says.

At the moment the human faeces are visible in the water which flows to the spruit.

He claims he has reported the problem to the metro several times, but they have not sent anyone out to investigate the tunnel or the origin of the sewage leak.

“This problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible as it will have devastating consequences for the birds and fish in the Blesbokspruit,” says Duncan.

Despite sending question to the metro on October 11, no response has been received to date.
