Video: Date set for Caylum’s operation

Caylum Willemse will undergo his life-changing operation in Boston, in the States, on November 18.

The eight-month-old boy and his parents will be leaving for Boston on November 9.

The operation will be done by Dr Russell Jennings, the director of the oesophageal and airway treatment centre at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Speaking to the Advertiser on the phone, on Friday, Caylum’s father Wayne commented: “The procedure is called a posterior tracheomalacia and the estimated time for the operation is eight to 18 hours.”

Caylum was discharged from the Netcare Clinton Hospital in Alberton on October 19 and is being cared for by two nurses at the family home in Meyerton.

Wayne says his son’s chest is currently slightly irritated, but they attribute this to the change of climate.

“The two nurses are wonderful and assist us with taking care of him,” says Wayne.

According to Wayne, Caylum will be on life support after the operation for approximately three to four days.

“This will be followed by another two to four weeks in hospital before we will be able to return to South Africa,” he says.

Although Caylum might still need a nurse when the family returns home from Boston, his parents are grateful for every contribution made towards the Caylum Foundation.

“Without the community’s help we would not have been able to fulfil our dream to get the best medical treatment for our son,” says Wayne.
