GDE wish matrics well for finals

Most Grade 12s will start their National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams with their first English paper on Monday, while others tackled their computer applications technology practical exam last Wednesday.

Springs has 1 151 matric pupils and KwaThema registered 1 133 students, while there are 1 634 from Tsakane and 976 from Duduza – 4 894 in total.

According to a statement received from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) Oupa Bodibe says more students will write maths and science this year.

An extensive network of 1 555 monitors has been established across the province to ensure that the processes of the exams are fair, credible and of integrity.

“Daily incident reports will be submitted by districts, collated and submitted to the national Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Umalusi,” adds Bodibe.

The DBE is working with law enforcement agencies to ensure that measures are taken to strengthen security during the examination.

After the announcement of the matric results, the top three achievers in each township school automatically obtain a full bursary – which includes registration fees, tuition fees and prescribed books to the maximum bursary amount of R55 000 per academic year at a higher education institution.

In addition, each school that scores 100% pass rate, will automatically become a full Information Communication Technology school.

“That means from Grade Eight to 12, the schools will be fully kitted with smart boards, learners will receive tablets with educational content and educators are provided with laptop computers for teaching,” explains Bodibe.

The GDE has a standing agreement with Childline to assist learners who find themselves in stressful situations, due to pressure they might experience from the exams.

Childline can be reached on 08000 55 555 for counselling assistance.

The national results will be released on January 5.

When combining inspiration and hard work, the reward is always fulfilling.

“We wish all the Grade 12s and all other learners the best of luck and assure them that they have our full support,” concludes Bodibe.
