UPDATE: Hoërskool Hugenote fire

A preliminary investigation indicates that either welding or metal grinding sparks started the fire at Hoërskool Hugenote last Wednesday, says district manager media liaison of the Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), William Ntladi.

A school maintenance worker was performing maintenance work on the grandstands at the time of the incident.

Ntladi says it is alleged that the sparks made their way down into the storage rooms under the pavilion.

“The change rooms used by players caught fire and sporting equipment were destroyed as a result,” says Ntladi.

The Springs Central Fire station received a call at 2.53pm and found the grandstands on fire upon arrival.
