WATCH: Duck pond’s feathered friends enjoy the fresh water

The newly installed borehole pump provides fresh water to the George Sutter Park duck pond in Selection Park.

Kathy Preston (64) says the geese and ducks, as well as the fish, are much more comfortable with the almost-filled pond.

The Advertiser reported on the installation of the borehole pump (‘Duck pond fills up with water‘, Advertiser, October 13).

“We have also put a grid in front of the storm water drain on the corner of Nigel and Davis roads to prevent litter from flowing into the pond with the rain water,” she says.

The borehole pump has been pumping continuously for the past two weeks to fill the pond and Kathy is very pleased that the rain contributes as well.

Since the pond was almost empty three weeks ago, the goose and duck eggs have hatched and the ducklings and goslings couldn’t get out of the pond to feed.

Kathy had to feed them inside the pond.

“That has since changed and it is wonderful to watch our feathered friends getting in and out of the pond with ease,” she says.

The birds are being fed daily by Kathy and her husband Henry Preston (62).

“We are grateful for all the help from Hennie Brits and the two local businessmen Cliff Carr and Matthew Msiza,” says Kathy
