Radiologist recommends TLC

Radiologist Dr Reshma Naik, from Netcare, suggests all women should do breast self-examination.

Mammogram screenings are usually done on women older than 35 years.

However, women younger than 35 years should carry out regular breast self-examinations.

Naik says these women should preferably examine their breasts two to three days after their menstruation cycle.

“The reason for this is because the breasts are more sensitive during the cycle and it might give a false impression and cause unnecessary panic,” she explains.

How to do a breast self-examination:

• Lie down and put a pillow under your right shoulder.

Place your right arm behind your head.

• Use the finger pads of your three middle fingers on your left hand to feel for lumps or thickening.

Your finger pads are the top third of each finger.

• Press firmly enough to know how your breast feels.

If you’re not sure how hard to press, ask for advice from a health care practitioner.

• Move around the breast in a set way.

You can choose either the circle movement, the up and down line or the wedge.

• Now examine your left breast using the right hand finger pads.

• If you find any changes, see your doctor right away.

Dr Naik says all women can check their breasts while standing in front of a mirror or in the shower.
