WATCH: Fire destroys sports equipment at Hoërskool Hugenote

A fire swept through the storage rooms under the grandstands on the sports fields Hoërskool Hugenote at around 3pm on Wednesday, destroying the majority of their sports equipment.

At the time of the fire a member of the school’s maintenance team was in the area and ran to grab fire extinguishers to curb the blaze.

However, these proved ineffectual in dousing the fire and Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) was called to extinguish the fire.

The adjacent building also suffered structural damage as a section of the brick wall bent away from the stands and the electricity connection running to the cafeteria was completely destroyed according to the school’s sports organiser Braam Booysens.

He says they are extremely grateful that the newly built bathrooms were undamaged.

DEMS worker looks at the room which was filled to the top with high jump mattresses.

No injuries were reported although the maintenance worker suffered smoke inhalation and shock.

At the time of publication the principal of the school, Frans Styger was not available for comment.
More details will follow when comment is received.

The Addie is still awaiting more information from William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.
