In a press release received from the metro on Tuesday, Masina stated: “This is a great initiative and we appeal to more companies to follow suit.”

He says the initiative augurs well for the literacy standard of the city and expressed his excitement that over 400 children have become beneficiaries of such a great initiative.

“The bottom line is that if we are to win the battle against poverty, unemployment and inequality, then our people must be educated so that they can obtain the necessary skills to survive on their own.

“Any nation that is serious about its future invests in the education of its nationals,” he says.

Gibela gave life to its commitment to local socio-economic development when it launched the maths, science and English classes at the Dunnottar manufacturing site.

The site is currently under construction. Beneficiaries who receive Saturday classes come from Duduza, Nigel and KwaThema.

Masina encouraged the beneficiaries to seize the opportunity and ‘get the best out of it’.

“Our future is in the hands of these youngsters and we know that if they prosper, so do we as a city, province and South Africa at large,” says the mayor.
